Capital Markets & Wealthtech

Capital Markets & Wealthtech brings together digital brokers, wealth platforms, exchanges, market-data and post-trade providers, and crypto venues. Recent activity centres on tokenised assets and stablecoin settlement, AI built into advisory and research tools, and extended-hours and 24-hour trading. Regulatory and political scrutiny is rising at the same time: the SEC's June 2026 proposal on market-structure rules, prediction-market legislation, congressional findings on Webull, and an EU antitrust probe involving Nasdaq.

Active institutional funds cut a net $150.1 million in Q2 2026, versus $15.5 billion in Q1 2026 — an outflow 99% smaller. 48.6% of companies in this sub-theme saw decreased active positions in Q2 2026.

Overview

The sub-theme covers technology-led distribution, execution and infrastructure for investing and wealth management. It has four layers. Front-end platforms include Robinhood, Webull, Schwab, LPL Financial, SoFi and Coinbase. Execution and market-making is led by Virtu. Exchanges and clearing venues include Nasdaq, CME Group, Cboe and the London Stock Exchange Group. Data, research and workflow providers include Morningstar, FactSet and Broadridge. Large managers and banks, such as BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and T. Rowe Price, sit alongside as product manufacturers, distributors and capital providers. The layers depend on one another. Nasdaq supplies market data to Robinhood and Webull. Virtu is the sole market maker for Robinhood's overnight trades. Morningstar prepares research reports supplied to Robinhood. Circle issues and fulfils USDC orders for Robinhood. Coinbase distributes USDC and shares in Circle-related revenue. Pershing provides clearing and account maintenance for T. Rowe Price's brokerage, and Fidelity National Information Services provides its recordkeeping. LPL's institution services channel serves Prudential Advisors and M&T Bank. WisdomTree's model portfolios reach advisors through LPL, Schwab and Morgan Stanley. Exchanges compete with one another, as Nasdaq does with ICE, Cboe, Miami International Holdings and the London Stock Exchange Group. They also license indices to each other, with Nasdaq licensing to CME Group and CME Group licensing from S&P Dow Jones Indices. Cloud infrastructure is increasingly third-party: Google Cloud serves CME Group and Webull. The sub-theme is defined by regulated entities, including broker-dealers, banks, trust companies and exchanges. Net-capital, custody and conduct rules therefore shape every business model. Asset managers without material technology-led distribution are excluded.

SectorNasdaq Invests $100M in Kraken for Tokenized StocksSep 10, 2026

The investment cements Nasdaq as a first-mover among traditional exchanges racing to tokenize equities, directly boosting Kraken's valuation and market credibility. It intensifies competition with NYSE/ICE, Securitize, Dinari, Robinhood, Coinbase and Binance, all pursuing overlapping tokenized-securities strategies, likely accelerating capital deployment and product launches across the sector. The SEC's rule-change approval signals a friendlier U.S. regulatory posture toward blockchain-based securities, which could unlock institutional participation previously held back by legal ambiguity. However, unresolved disputes—such as AMC's objection to Robinhood's tokenized shares—highlight lingering legal risk around whether these instruments confer real ownership, which could invite tighter SEC oversight before the planned Q2 2027 launch. Overall, expect increased M&A, partnership announcements, and valuation re-ratings for crypto exchanges and capital-markets infrastructure providers tied to tokenization.

TechnologyDinari Launches Tokenized S&P 500 Stocks via Circle PartnershipAug 4, 2026

Making the entire S&P 500 available as tokenized equities on Circle's regulated stablecoin rails marks a structural step toward on-chain equity markets operating in parallel with traditional exchanges. This could siphon trading volume and custody assets from traditional brokerages if adoption scales, particularly for fractional and 24/7 trading use cases. Circle benefits directly as its USDC stablecoin infrastructure becomes the settlement layer for tokenized equity transactions. Traditional exchanges and brokerages face a long-term structural threat if tokenized equities gain regulatory acceptance and liquidity depth. Regulators will face pressure to clarify the legal status of tokenized securities, and the outcome of that clarification will determine how durable this structural shift becomes.

TechnologyCoinbase Launches Fully Backed Tokenized US Stocks On-ChainJun 16, 2026

This is a genuine structural event: tokenized equities backed 1:1 and settled on-chain with dividends represents a new layer of financial infrastructure that bypasses traditional brokerage and clearinghouse rails for equity exposure. Coinbase gains a first-mover advantage in a product that could attract both retail and institutional users who want programmable, composable equity exposure. Traditional stock exchanges, clearinghouses, and brokerages face a long-run disintermediation threat as on-chain settlement matures. DeFi protocols that can integrate tokenized equities as collateral or yield instruments gain new composability. Rivals Robinhood and Kraken face pressure to match or fall behind in a product category that could define the next decade of digital finance.

SectorSEC Eliminates PDT Rule for Small AccountsJun 4, 2026

The PDT rule has been a structural gatekeeper in retail brokerage for decades; its elimination is a durable shift in the competitive landscape for retail-focused brokers. Platforms that serve small retail traders — Robinhood, Webull, and Interactive Brokers — gain a direct structural tailwind as their addressable active-trading user base expands. Higher trade frequency from newly unrestricted accounts will increase order flow volume, boosting payment-for-order-flow revenues and exchange-related fee income. Traditional full-service brokers and institutions that competed less on retail day-trading are largely unaffected. Market makers and high-frequency trading firms that purchase retail order flow stand to benefit from increased volume.

GeopoliticalChina Tightens Access to U.S. Stocks for Retail InvestorsJun 2, 2026

Chinese regulatory tightening on offshore brokerages serving mainland retail investors represents a durable structural constraint on cross-border capital flows from China to U.S. equity markets. Futu Holdings and UP Fintech (Tiger Brokers) face the most direct impact as their core business model depends on Chinese retail access to foreign markets. This action reduces a source of marginal demand for U.S. equities from Chinese retail investors, though the aggregate volume impact on U.S. markets is modest. Domestic Chinese brokerages and state-affiliated financial platforms may gain share as retail investors are redirected toward approved domestic channels. Longer term, this fits the broader pattern of China reducing financial interdependence with the U.S., accelerating capital markets decoupling.
