mRNA Platforms

mRNA platforms are anchored by Pfizer and BioNTech (co-developers of Comirnaty), Moderna and Arcturus. The platform is no longer judged on COVID-19 vaccines alone, and oncology is now the main test of whether it extends beyond them. Recent evidence is mixed. BioNTech's BNT113 head and neck cancer trial missed its first dual primary endpoint, Arcturus lost its CSL Seqirus partnership and has an indefinitely delayed US filing for KOSTAIVE, and Pfizer faces a new state lawsuit over its COVID-19 vaccine. Lipid nanoparticle patent disputes, US vaccine regulatory shifts and policy exposure remain the main constraints disclosed in company filings.

Active institutional exposure flipped from a net inflow of $1.0 billion in Q1 2026 to a net outflow of $1.9 billion in Q2 2026. 50% of companies in this sub-theme saw decreased active positions in Q2 2026.

Overview

mRNA platforms use messenger RNA, typically delivered in lipid nanoparticles, to instruct cells to make a target protein. The same chassis supports prophylactic vaccines, individualized cancer immunotherapies and therapeutic protein replacement. The sub-theme is organized around a few structural features. First, commercial scale in vaccines has come through large-partner alliances. Pfizer and BioNTech jointly develop and commercialize Comirnaty, sharing development costs and gross profits equally across most global markets. Moderna sells its own mRNA vaccines, and Arcturus partners its COVID-19 franchise. These companies compete directly in COVID-19 vaccines. Second, oncology is pursued through pharma co-development. Merck and Moderna share costs, profits and losses equally on intismeran autogene (mRNA-4157), an individualized neoantigen therapy studied with Keytruda in melanoma and NSCLC. BioNTech's mRNA cancer vaccine BNT116 is being studied alongside Regeneron's pipeline products. Third, lipid nanoparticle delivery is a contested IP layer. Genevant grants Moderna a global non-exclusive license to its LNP technology for infectious disease applications as part of a $2.25 billion patent infringement settlement, and Alnylam has filed patent complaints against Pfizer over Comirnaty. Fourth, manufacturing and enabling services are specialized. Siemens collaborates with BioNTech on a digitalized production site for individualized mRNA manufacturing, Personalis supplies genomic testing for Moderna's personalized cancer therapy trials, and Thermo Fisher provides CDMO services to Arcturus.
