Lending & Credit Platforms

Lending & Credit Platforms covers digital underwriting, consumer and SME credit marketplaces and buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) platforms. The verified dossier shows a sub-theme built on three layers: merchant and payments distribution, credit-data and decisioning inputs, and card-network and settlement rails. Recent activity centres on BNPL consolidation and distribution (Grab–Atome, Affirm–Antom), credit-data tooling at the bureaus, and stablecoin settlement at SoFi. The main risks in the verified material are regulatory: credit-scoring rules, AML enforcement, a consumer-data rule awaiting reconsideration, and an FCA competition investigation at PayPal.

Active institutional funds cut a net $5.5 billion in Q2 2026, versus $8.0 billion in Q1 2026 — an outflow 31% smaller. 55.6% of companies in this sub-theme saw decreased active positions in Q2 2026.

Overview

Lending & Credit Platforms is the layer of financial services where credit is originated, underwritten, distributed or financed through software-led platforms rather than branch-based banks. It spans BNPL providers, consumer and merchant financing programs, digital-bank lenders and the data and decisioning inputs that underpin credit decisions. Conventional banks and card issuers belong only where platform economics are central. The verified relationships show three structural layers. The first is merchant and payments distribution. Shopify holds an equity investment in Affirm, and Klarna provides local payment method services that Shopify has integrated into Shopify Payments in certain countries. PayPal is one of Shopify's primary payment service providers, and Shopify Payments also pays card network fees to American Express, Visa and Mastercard. Bread Financial, through Comenity Capital Bank, operates the Dell Pay Credit revolving financing program on behalf of Dell Technologies, a retailer-embedded model. Block's Square point-of-sale products let sellers accept cards from Mastercard, Discover and American Express. The second layer is credit data and decisioning. FICO supplies scoring solutions distributed through Equifax and TransUnion, and the three bureaus collectively account for 51% of FICO's fiscal 2025 revenue as a major-customer disclosure. Schwab uses FICO credit scoring data in its residential loan underwriting guidelines. FICO competes with ACI Worldwide, IBM and Pegasystems in fraud and decision platforms. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion have formed an alliance selling a competing credit scoring product. The third layer is competition from adjacent incumbents. Amazon and Apple offer payments and credit as extensions of their core businesses and compete with BBVA, and Nu Bank is entering Mexico, where BBVA also operates. Disclosed constraints in this theme sit mostly with payments and consumer-finance operators. Affirm, Bread Financial, Klarna and Grab have no constraint passages on record in the verified dataset.
