Digital Assets & Bitcoin

Digital Assets & Bitcoin spans miners, exchanges and custodians, stablecoin issuers and bitcoin-treasury holders. The most visible activity in the verified data is miners converting power and sites into contracted AI and HPC capacity, while exchange, custody and stablecoin plumbing keeps deepening. The main constraints are grid-access and tariff exposure, customer concentration and state-level compliance burdens. Several data points on bitcoin prices, ETF flows and policy are external and not yet confirmed.

Active institutional funds added a net $9.7 billion in Q2 2026, versus $3.0 billion in Q1 2026 — an inflow 224% larger. 80.6% of companies in this sub-theme saw increased active positions in Q2 2026.

Overview

This sub-theme covers the businesses that produce, trade, safekeep and settle bitcoin and other digital assets, plus companies whose core strategy is holding bitcoin. It has four structural layers. The first is miners and hosts (TeraWulf, Hut 8, Riot, MARA, IREN, CleanSpark, Bitdeer, Cipher Digital, Core Scientific, Bit Digital, Argo, HIVE, Greenidge, Keel, American Bitcoin), which turn cheap, interconnected power into hashrate and increasingly into data-center capacity. They compete mainly on power access, site pipelines and cost of capital, and their peer sets overlap heavily with HPC data-center developers such as Applied Digital. The second layer is hardware and services suppliers: Canaan supplies ASIC miners, Block supplies custom ASIC chips to Core Scientific, Nvidia and AMD supply GPUs, and Foundry operates mining pools. The third layer is trading, custody and stablecoin infrastructure. Coinbase offers exchange, custody and prime-broker services, including to Riot, and distributes Circle's USDC. Robinhood, eToro, Bakkt and Galaxy provide retail and institutional access. Circle manages stablecoin reserves with BlackRock, and Tron acts as a settlement network for USDT. The fourth layer is asset-holding and wrapper vehicles: Strategy buys bitcoin through Coinbase, WisdomTree runs digital-asset funds, and Canton Strategic Holdings and Forward Industries hold digital-asset treasuries. Companies that merely accept crypto payments sit outside the definition. The group is exposed to the bitcoin price, power-market and interconnection rules, hardware import regimes, and state, federal and EU licensing and custody regulation.

SectorBinance hit by $6.3 billion North Korea-linked hackOct 30, 2026

A $6.3 billion theft from Binance is the largest crypto exchange hack on record, well above the $1.5 billion Bybit breach of February 2025. Binance has pledged to cover all losses, and Fundstrat's Sean Farrell sees no meaningful solvency risk, but the suspension of withdrawals makes the speed and orderliness of their resumption the key market signal. About $3 billion is frozen and about $3.3 billion remains unfrozen; the roughly $1.2 billion SAFU fund would cover only about a third of the unfrozen amount if frozen stablecoins are returned. Attribution to TraderTraitor strengthens the case for sanctions, tighter exchange security standards and international coordination. Crypto sentiment is at risk if outflows turn disorderly or Binance has to sell reserves to cover a shortfall.

SectorSoFi Launches First Consumer Tokenized DepositsOct 23, 2026

SoFi, a federally chartered bank, is the first to bring interest-bearing, FDIC-protected tokenized deposits to consumers, positioning them as a bank-regulated alternative to stablecoins. The product targets crypto users who park cash in stablecoins and want yield, and lets them buy Bitcoin and pay service providers such as Mastercard that also hold SoFi accounts. It tests whether banks can capture blockchain benefits like 24/7 settlement inside the existing regulatory perimeter, especially after the Clarity Act failed over stablecoin interest. The main limitation is that transfers only work between parties who both bank with SoFi, which stablecoin advocates see as a serious constraint. Stablecoin issuers like Circle and Coinbase face a new competitive angle, while other banks may be pushed to follow.

SectorKraken parent Payward to buy Saldo BankOct 15, 2026

Payward's agreement to buy Saldo Bank would make it the first crypto-native owner of an EU-licensed bank, moving beyond the custody-and-payments trust charters held by US peers such as Coinbase and Ripple. EU passporting would let Kraken offer interest-bearing deposits, consumer and SME loans, cards and SEPA transfers across multiple markets once the deal closes in 2027. The bank license also lets Payward offer banking-as-a-service infrastructure to other fintechs, widening its revenue base beyond trading fees. The deal follows Kraken Financial's Federal Reserve account and Nasdaq's $100 million investment at a reported $21 billion valuation, which together signal growing integration of crypto firms into regulated finance. Regulatory approval remains a key risk, and the pressure is on competing exchanges and neobanks to pursue bank licenses or partnerships of their own.

MacroBank of Japan Hikes Rate to 1.25%, 31-Year HighSep 18, 2026

The BOJ's fastest tightening move since starting normalization in 2024 signals growing urgency to contain inflation and stabilize the yen, even as it exposes a widening rift with Prime Minister Takaichi's reflationist, expansionary-fiscal agenda. Japanese megabanks stand to benefit from wider net interest margins, while yen-sensitive exporters face renewed competitiveness pressure if currency strength follows through. The move also raises the risk of yen carry-trade unwinds that have historically spilled into global risk assets, including leveraged equity and crypto positions. Persistent US Treasury pressure on the BOJ underscores cross-border monetary friction that could complicate G20 policy coordination. Markets will watch the pace of further hikes closely, as continued acceleration could tighten global dollar-yen funding conditions materially into 2027.

SectorNasdaq Invests $100M in Kraken for Tokenized StocksSep 10, 2026

The investment cements Nasdaq as a first-mover among traditional exchanges racing to tokenize equities, directly boosting Kraken's valuation and market credibility. It intensifies competition with NYSE/ICE, Securitize, Dinari, Robinhood, Coinbase and Binance, all pursuing overlapping tokenized-securities strategies, likely accelerating capital deployment and product launches across the sector. The SEC's rule-change approval signals a friendlier U.S. regulatory posture toward blockchain-based securities, which could unlock institutional participation previously held back by legal ambiguity. However, unresolved disputes—such as AMC's objection to Robinhood's tokenized shares—highlight lingering legal risk around whether these instruments confer real ownership, which could invite tighter SEC oversight before the planned Q2 2027 launch. Overall, expect increased M&A, partnership announcements, and valuation re-ratings for crypto exchanges and capital-markets infrastructure providers tied to tokenization.
