Diagnostics & Imaging

Diagnostics & Imaging spans imaging hardware, analytical and clinical diagnostic instruments, sequencing-based and AI-enabled detection platforms, and the laboratories that run them. Recent activity is concentrated in imaging and digital pathology deals, cancer-detection regulatory milestones and payer coverage. Against that, tariffs, China procurement policy, funding pressure and a cluster of enforcement matters weigh on the group. The dossier supports a constructive but uneven picture.

Active institutional funds cut a net $4.7 billion in Q2 2026, versus $27.7 billion in Q1 2026 — an outflow 83% smaller. 47.4% of companies in this sub-theme saw decreased active positions in Q2 2026.

Overview

Diagnostics & Imaging covers the instruments, imaging systems and software platforms that detect disease, plus the laboratories and data infrastructure that turn those signals into clinical decisions. It has four layers. Imaging OEMs such as GE HealthCare and Koninklijke Philips sell scanners and clinical software. Instrument and tools vendors such as Agilent, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Bruker, Bio-Rad and Cytek sell analytical and cell-analysis platforms. Sequencing-based and algorithm-driven detection companies include Tempus AI, Guardant Health, Natera, GRAIL, Veracyte, Adaptive Biotechnologies, Personalis and Heartflow. Reference laboratories such as Quest Diagnostics and Labcorp operate at scale. The structure is shaped by shared dependencies. Illumina is the dominant sequencer and reagent supplier to several detection companies, and Alphabet and Microsoft supply cloud and AI infrastructure to Tempus AI, Quest, Adaptive and GeneDx. Competition is dense and mostly head-to-head. GE HealthCare names Siemens Healthineers as a primary rival, and Bio-Rad names Abbott, Becton Dickinson, Danaher, Thermo Fisher, Siemens and QuidelOrtho in clinical diagnostics. In oncology testing, Tempus, Guardant, Natera, Caris, NeoGenomics, Myriad and others compete across the same markets. Commercial viability depends on FDA authorization, CLIA laboratory certification and payer reimbursement, so regulation and coverage are built into the economics.

SectorUK Commits £100M to Domestic AI Procurement ProgramSep 2, 2026

This is a new committed public procurement event that directly reshapes the UK AI supply chain. NHS and defense AI vendors with UK operations gain a funded government customer at scale, while non-UK AI vendors face a procurement preference barrier. The program's focus on agent security explicitly creates a new public-sector demand signal for agentic AI and cybersecurity products. Defense AI suppliers already operating in the UK market are positioned to capture the defense compute allocation. The scheme may serve as a template for similar programs in allied nations, amplifying its structural significance beyond the £100M headline.
