DeFi & Smart Contracts

DeFi & Smart Contracts is represented here mainly by stablecoin infrastructure and settlement networks rather than by lending or trading protocols. Coinbase supplies distribution, custody and brokerage services, Circle issues USDC, and Tron settles a large share of USDT activity. Recent internal evidence centers on Tron's ecosystem integrations and Circle's Binance investment and Arc blockchain. Coinbase and Canton Strategic Holdings have no recent activity data. The main internally confirmed risks are Coinbase's regulatory inquiries and capital requirements, Circle's redemption and reserve obligations, and reliance on a few commercial relationships.

Active institutional funds cut a net $638.0 million in Q2 2026, versus $396.8 million in Q1 2026. 60% of companies in this sub-theme saw decreased active positions in Q2 2026.

Overview

DeFi & Smart Contracts covers decentralized finance protocols and programmable blockchain platforms. Value moves through on-chain settlement layers, stablecoins and the exchange, custody and distribution services that connect them to regulated finance. In this dataset the structure has three layers. Stablecoin issuance and reserves: Circle issues USDC, co-founded with Coinbase, and manages its U.S. fiat reserves largely through BlackRock-managed products. Distribution, custody and brokerage: Coinbase distributes USDC and shares revenue with Circle, provides custodial and prime broker services to Riot Platforms, and operates the exchange Strategy uses to buy and trade bitcoin. Settlement networks: Tron runs on delegated proof-of-stake, where TRX holders stake tokens to elect block producers, and acts as a settlement layer for USDT. Canton Strategic Holdings sits alongside these layers. Broadridge Financial Solutions holds an equity interest in it in exchange for Canton Coins. Competition comes from Robinhood in crypto trading and from Bitdeer in mining-related services. Circle also supplies USDC liquidity to Robinhood customers.

SectorCircle Approved to Operate as Trust BankJul 10, 2026

Circle's OCC trust bank approval is a structural regulatory inflection point for the stablecoin industry: it transforms the largest USD-pegged stablecoin issuer into a federally regulated financial institution with access to Fed payment infrastructure. This creates a durable competitive moat for Circle's USDC over non-bank stablecoin issuers and over bank-issued stablecoins that lack Circle's now-established regulatory standing. Traditional banks and payment processors that compete with stablecoin settlement face a newly credentialed competitor with lower cost settlement infrastructure. The approval also accelerates institutional adoption of USDC as a settlement medium in securities and payments, benefiting blockchain infrastructure and DeFi protocols built on USDC liquidity. It sets a template for other stablecoin issuers to pursue similar federal charters.

TechnologyCoinbase Launches Fully Backed Tokenized US Stocks On-ChainJun 16, 2026

This is a genuine structural event: tokenized equities backed 1:1 and settled on-chain with dividends represents a new layer of financial infrastructure that bypasses traditional brokerage and clearinghouse rails for equity exposure. Coinbase gains a first-mover advantage in a product that could attract both retail and institutional users who want programmable, composable equity exposure. Traditional stock exchanges, clearinghouses, and brokerages face a long-run disintermediation threat as on-chain settlement matures. DeFi protocols that can integrate tokenized equities as collateral or yield instruments gain new composability. Rivals Robinhood and Kraken face pressure to match or fall behind in a product category that could define the next decade of digital finance.

SectorSEC Plans to Allow Tokenized Stock TradingMay 20, 2026

The SEC permitting tokenized stock trading represents a genuine rule-of-the-game change for capital markets infrastructure. Traditional exchanges and broker-dealers face disintermediation risk as blockchain-based settlement could bypass legacy clearing and custody chains. DeFi and smart contract platforms gain a major legitimacy boost as securities-grade assets migrate on-chain. Crypto infrastructure providers — layer-1 networks, custody solutions, and tokenization middleware — stand to benefit structurally over multi-year horizons. Conversely, incumbent clearinghouses like DTCC and traditional custodians face existential pressure on settlement fee revenue.
