Cell Therapy

Cell therapy is a crowded field in which large pharmaceutical companies hold the approved autologous CAR-T products while a wide group of smaller developers pursue allogeneic, iPSC-derived, NK-cell, in vivo and autoimmune-focused approaches. Recent activity is mixed. Early autoimmune data, in vivo CAR-T progress, Gilead's completed Arcellx acquisition and a raised revenue outlook at Iovance sit alongside program exits at Cellectis and Caribou. Manufacturing, regulatory, tariff and funding constraints disclosed in company filings are the main risks.

Active institutional funds added a net $9.4 billion in Q2 2026, versus $3.6 billion in Q1 2026 — an inflow 163% larger. 66.7% of companies in this sub-theme saw increased active positions in Q2 2026.

Overview

Cell therapy covers engineered and cell-derived treatments, principally CAR-T, for cancer and, increasingly, autoimmune disease. The field has three layers. The first is commercial incumbents. Novartis markets Kymriah, Bristol-Myers Squibb markets Breyanzi and Abecma, Gilead/Kite markets Yescarta and Tecartus, Johnson & Johnson co-markets Carvykti with Legend Biotech, and Autolus markets Aucatzyl. The second is a large group of clinical-stage developers pursuing differentiated formats. These include allogeneic and off-the-shelf products (Allogene, Caribou, Adicet), iPSC-derived products (Century, Fate), NK-cell products (Nkarta, Artiva), autologous autoimmune programs (Cabaletta, Kyverna, Cartesian) and ex vivo and in vivo cell engineering (Sana). The third is an enabling layer of gene-editing intellectual property and delivery technology. Cellectis licenses TALEN technology and other intellectual property to Iovance and Allogene. CRISPR Therapeutics licenses gene-editing rights to Nkarta and Adicet. MaxCyte supplies ex vivo electroporation technology to CRISPR Therapeutics' CAR-T programs and to TG Therapeutics' azer-cel program. Large pharma participates as acquirer, licensor, equity investor and, in the Novartis-Legend relationship, contract manufacturer. Developer relationships are overwhelmingly competitive, with named-competitor overlap across the same indications, and success depends on bespoke manufacturing, gene-editing intellectual property and clinical differentiation.
